It can be a real juggling act for office managers and business owners trying to maintain a balanced budget. In this current economic climate, businesses are facing quite a few potential challenges to their profit margins. Whether from the constantly climbing price of goods and services, or from the mounting labour costs and other employee expenses, office managers must be sure to pay persistent attention to business expenditure and income. In the midst of all these different cost pressures and other challenges, it is important that office managers do not lose track of the important duty of maintaining the cleanliness of their office spaces. Office managers must factor in cost pressures such as increases to the Consumer Price Index and rises in the statutory wage rates when planning their cleaning budgets.
The previous Federal Government announced that, effective from the 1st of July 2013, the Superannuation Guarantee would eventually increase from its previous level of 9 percent to an eventual level of 12 percent. Business owners and office managers will of course be familiar with the Superannuation Guarantee, which mandates compulsory superannuation contributions be made by employers on the part of their workers. The Superannuation Guarantee has increased by 0.25 percent to a current 9.25 percent in the financial year 2013/2014. In the next financial year there will be another increase to 9.5%, an increase of 0.25%. Each year following there will be a 0.5% increase to be paid by employers. Increases such of these drive home to employers the increasing costs associated with labour. Therefore, it's important that business owners and office managers factor in these additional costs when allocating funds to future cleaning budgets for their businesses.
According to the Bureau of Statistics, the CPI in Australia has increased by 0.6% in the first three months of 2014. This was in fact less of an increase than the predicted rate of 0.8%, as had been the case in the previous quarter. In any case, the increasing CPI index exposes the continued increasing costs of services and goods in Australia. Of course both businesses and households alike will feel the pain of these increases, and businesses must allow for these CPI increases when allocating funds for their cleaning budgets for the new financial year. The Annual Wage Review was tabled by the Fair Work Commission Minimum Wage Panel on 1st July 2013. The decision of the Fair Work Commission was to increase the minimum weekly wage by 2.6 percent, meaning employers would now be required to pay $16.37 an hour to their workers, an increase on the previous $15.96 per hour. Of course no-one is happy to pay more for services and goods, however increases evident in the CPI and rising costs related to labour will certainly impact all areas of business. Office managers should always take such cost pressures into account when determining an appropriate budget for the cleaning and maintenance of their company’s offices.
